WHAT IS THE WEBSTER TECHNIQUE?

A 6-step chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed for pregnancy

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the pelvic bones, muscles, and ligaments — designed to restore pelvic balance and reduce tension on the uterus throughout pregnancy. It's not a single adjustment. It's a structured 6-step protocol performed by a certified provider.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE TELLS US

Even Williams Obstetrics — the leading obstetrics reference — tells us that difficult labor is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic imbalances, and poor fetal positioning. Doctors of chiropractic are seeing that sacral adjustments and associated soft tissue releases (the Webster Technique) may improve uterine function, balance the pelvis, and reduce tension on the pelvic bones and ligaments — creating more optimal conditions for both baby and birth.

Pelvic balance

Restores proper alignment and mobility in the sacrum, pelvic bones, and supporting ligaments — reducing the mechanical stress that causes low back and hip pain in pregnancy.

Optimal space for baby

When pelvic bones and ligaments are balanced, the uterus has equal, symmetrical support. This allows your baby the space to move, grow, and position freely throughout pregnancy.

Smoother labor

Restoring pelvic balance before labor may improve uterine function and reduce labor difficulty. Many patients who didn't use Webster in prior pregnancies report significantly quicker, easier labors this time.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What your Webster Technique visit involves

The Webster Technique is conducted by Dr. Winkelmann, who has completed post-graduate certification through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). The visit is designed to be as comfortable as possible throughout every stage of pregnancy.

Comfortable positioning

The chiropractic table is specially adapted so you can lie face down at any stage of pregnancy — safely and comfortably. You remain fully clothed and no special preparation is needed.

Pelvic analysis

A systematic 6-step assessment of your pelvic alignment, sacral position, and the tension patterns in your pelvic muscles and ligaments — identifying where balance has been disrupted.

Gentle adjustment

Precise, gentle chiropractic adjustments to the sacrum and pelvis — restoring mobility and reducing unequal forces on the uterine ligaments. There may be some mild soreness, especially if it's been a while since your last treatment, but the technique itself is very gentle.

Soft tissue release

Associated soft tissue work releasing tension in the round ligaments, psoas, and other structures that contribute to pelvic imbalance and uterine constraint.

Most recipients notice immediate relief after their first visit. For others it takes 2–3 treatments before they notice a significant difference — especially later in pregnancy when symptoms have been building longer. If this is not your first pregnancy, you will typically notice a faster difference than you did before.

WHEN TO START

The earlier the better — but it's never too late.

Chiropractic is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Click any condition below to learn more about how we approach it.

WHY STARTING EARLY MATTERS

Early in pregnancy, the Webster Technique helps prevent pain from developing in the first place. It's much easier to maintain pelvic balance throughout pregnancy than to treat it once pain has already set in — especially in the third trimester.

Starting early also creates the most optimal environment for your baby to grow, develop, and move freely throughout the entire pregnancy — not just the final weeks.

WHAT IF I'M ALREADY IN LATE PREGNANCY?

The Webster Technique can be performed right up to the days before labor — and is actually most valuable as labor approaches. Restoring pelvic balance close to delivery may significantly improve the labor experience for you and your baby.

Patients who did not use Webster in previous pregnancies often tell us: "Labor was so much quicker and easier this time."

A COMMON QUESTION: WILL THIS TURN MY BREECH BABY?

Breech turning is only performed by obstetricians. The Webster Technique does not turn babies — it restores pelvic balance so that your baby has the space and freedom to move and position themselves optimally. When pelvic bones and ligaments are out of balance, unequal uterine pressure can restrict your baby's movement. Restoring balance creates the environment for your baby to do what they naturally want to do.
